Am I a good candidate for this treatment?

The best candidate is someone who has a naturally light - medium skin colour. IPL works best on Sun induced pigmentation, there is minimal effect on hormonal pigmentation.

For safety reasons, you may not be able to get this treatment if you have/are:

  • Current or history of cancer

  • Any diseases that can be stimulated by light (e.g. epilepsy)

  • Any active condition in the treatment area (e.g. eczema, psoriasis, rash)

  • History of skin disorders, keloids, unusual wound healing, or excessively sensitive skin

  • A tattoo or permanent makeup in the treatment area

  • Excessively tanned skin including fake tan products

How many sessions will I need to see results?

Most patients receive 3-4  treatments per area, with improvements visible after each session.

How often / far apart should the treatments be?

Treatments are done 4 weeks apart.

How long does a treatment session take?

One session usually lasts 15 - 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

What does the treatment feel like?

It feels like a spark against your skin, or like if someone  flicked you with a rubber band, as the applicator moves around the treatment area.

How will I feel after my treatment?

Your skin may feel warm, like a sunburn, and can remain red or sensitive  for anywhere from a few hours to a week. Pigmentation will become temporarily darker.  Be sure to follow instructions for before and after your treatment.

IPL skin rejuvenation requires several treatment sessions to achieve maximum results. IPL typically delivers long-lasting results that can be maintained with one maintenance  treatment half yearly. A professional skincare regime will also be prescribed to enhance and lengthen the results of IPL skin rejuvenation.

IPL skin rejuvenation does not require any downtime. That means that you’ll generally be free to return to the rest of your day following a treatment session. Some temporary redness and sensitivity in the treatment area is to be expected. It’s also possible that the skin in the treated area will feel sensitive for up to a week. Protecting your skin from the sun as part of your post-treatment plan is essential for creating optimal results.

How long will the results last?

It really depends on how your skin reacts to the treatment and how you care for your skin afterward. For example, if you protect your skin from the sun and use recommended skincare, the results can last many months. We recommend one touch-up session every 6 months.

Will it be painful?

The skin may be cooled before treatment to make as comfortable as possible. If you find it too uncomfortable, let the operator know and they can adjust the intensity.

A patch test is done at your initial consultation to test sensivity.

I have darker skin – can I still get this treatment done? IPL treatments work best for light to medium skin tones. The treatment may work on darker skin, but there is a higher risk of discolouration and adverse reaction because darker skin has more pigment in it. The IPL is attracted to pigment making it more likely to burn than react favourably to treatment. It’s best to consult with the technician to see if the treatment is right for you.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for the treatment?

Your therapist will advise you to prep the skin with Vitamin C serum (to strengthen, protect and inhibit excess pigment production) and SPF (to protect from UV rays)  for a few weeks before treatment. The healthier and more resilient the skin is prior to treatment the better the results and less chance of adverse reaction.

Certain skincare products must be discontinued a few days either side of a treatment - these include Retinol products, Vitamin C Products, AHA's, BHA's, fake tanning products and any other potentially sensitising products which your therapist will go through in the consultation.

On the day of treatment make sure your skin is clean. Do not apply any lotions, creams or makeup before your session,  You may be advised to shave the area before your treatment.

Full Preparation information will be given at your initial consultation

Do I need to do anything after my treatment?

Avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen. You should also avoid hot baths, massages, or any treatment that requires firm contact with the skin for the first 2 days after your treatment.  Full aftercare information is given at your initial Consultation

Can I put on makeup or lotion right after my treatment?

Yes, you can apply mineral makeup immediately after your treatment, but make sure you put on sunscreen first.
